Spring in South Africa has a particular rhythm. The days warm up fast, the light lingers, and by six o'clock everyone wants to be outside. Then the sun drops and the air cools quickly, especially along the coast and on the Highveld. A well-styled patio handles both halves of that evening. Here's how we approach it.
1. Start with seating you actually want to sit in
Outdoor seating often ends up as an afterthought: a hard bench or a set of plastic chairs that nobody lingers on. Choose one or two pieces with real presence instead. Woven and natural-fibre chairs suit South African light well. They look warm in the late afternoon and weather into a lovely patina on a covered stoep.
The Serengeti Woven Chair and Serengeti Open Chair work well in pairs. If you have a beam or a corner to fill, a hanging egg chair instantly becomes the seat everyone fights over.
2. Layer throws for the moment the temperature drops
This is the detail that keeps people outside for an extra hour. Drape a throw over the arm of each chair, or fold two or three into a basket within reach. Choose natural cotton in earthy tones: sand, ivory, ochre and charcoal sit comfortably against timber decking, stone and greenery.
Our Karoo Cotton Throw (pictured above) is soft enough for bare shoulders and heavy enough for a proper chill. For something with pattern, the Sandbank Cotton Throw adds a relaxed stripe, and the Delta Cotton Blend Throw brings a bolder graphic note.
Styling tip: Mix one patterned throw with one plain one per seating area. Two patterns compete; one pattern and a solid look deliberate.
3. Give drinks and snacks a proper home
A tray is the simplest way to make an outdoor setting look styled rather than cluttered. It gathers glasses, a jug and a candle into one tidy composition, and it can be carried inside in one trip when the mosquitoes arrive.
The Serengeti Drinks Tray with Handles is built for exactly this. For a more tailored look, a Field Leather Tray on a side table holds candles, matches and a small vase.
4. Bring the garden onto the patio
Spring is the season to use what's growing. Cut a few stems of whatever is flowering, such as agapanthus, fynbos, wild jasmine or even branches of new leaves, and put them in something simple and heavy enough not to blow over. Keep arrangements low on dining tables so conversation flows across them.
5. Plan your lighting before it gets dark
Overhead security lights kill the mood instantly. Instead, work in layers: lanterns or candles at table height, a warm lamp or string lights overhead, and nothing brighter than you need. Warm white (around 2700K) is the most flattering for skin and timber.
6. Store smart for the South African weather
Spring weather is changeable. Keep a covered basket or chest near the door so throws and cushions can be packed away quickly when a front comes through. A lidded piece like the Serengeti Kist doubles as extra seating when you have a crowd.
The short version
- One or two comfortable, natural-fibre chairs beat a full outdoor set nobody uses.
- A throw on every seat keeps people outside after sunset.
- Pair one patterned throw with one plain one.
- Use trays to gather drinks and candles into a single, tidy composition.
- Light low and warm.
- Keep a storage chest close by for sudden weather changes.
