Lighting is the most underrated tool in interior design. You can have beautiful furniture and a perfect colour palette, but if the whole room is lit by a single downlight or a bare ceiling fitting, it will feel flat. The secret designers use is layering: several light sources at different heights, each doing a different job.
The three layers every room needs
Ambient light is the general glow that lets you move around safely. In most South African homes it comes from the ceiling, and a good pendant is the best way to deliver it.
Task light is focused light where you need it: a desk lamp for working, a reading lamp beside a chair, a light over a kitchen island.
Accent light adds atmosphere and depth. It includes wall lights, a lamp on a console, or a glow that picks out texture on a wall or a favourite object.
Get all three working together and a room feels finished, flexible and inviting at any time of day.
1. Start with a statement pendant
A pendant is the one light fitting everyone notices, so let it carry some personality. Natural woven shades are a favourite of ours. They soften the light, throw beautiful patterned shadows onto the ceiling and walls, and bring warmth to both modern and coastal interiors.
The Woven Cage Pendant Lampshade (pictured above) is open and airy, ideal over a dining table or in a double-volume living area. For a softer silhouette, the Woven Drop Pendant works beautifully in a bedroom or entrance, while the Woven Drum Pendant gives broader, more even light.
Sizing tip: Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the pendant roughly 75 to 85cm above the tabletop, and choose a shade about half to two-thirds the width of the table. In a living room with no table beneath it, keep at least 2.1m of clearance so nobody walks into it.
2. Add table lamps at eye level
Table lamps are what make a room feel lived in at night. Place them where the light will fall at seated eye level: on side tables beside the sofa, on a console behind it, or on bedside tables.
Stone and ceramic bases add weight and texture. The Noetzie Marble Lamp brings a natural, sculptural quality to a side table, and the Cederberg Column Lamp has the height and presence for a console or sideboard. For a smaller surface, the Pebble Lamp has a softer, organic shape.
Styling tip: Use lamps in pairs to create symmetry (either side of a bed or a sofa), or use odd numbers across a room to lead the eye from one corner to another.
3. Fill dark corners with a floor lamp
Almost every living room has a corner that goes dark after sunset. A floor lamp beside an armchair solves it instantly and creates a reading nook at the same time. The Sedge Floor Lamp is slim enough to tuck in beside a chair without crowding it.
4. Use wall lights for mood and function
Wall lights free up surfaces, which makes them ideal for bedsides, passages, bathrooms and stairwells. They also wash light across the wall, which highlights texture in plaster, stone or panelling.
The Cape Wall Light is a simple, versatile shape that suits bedrooms and passages. The Aura Cloud Wall Light gives off a softer, diffused glow that is lovely in a lounge or a guest room.
5. Choose the right bulb
The fitting is only half of it. For living spaces and bedrooms, choose warm white bulbs around 2700K, which flatter skin tones, timber and natural fibres. Save cooler whites (4000K) for kitchens, laundries and workspaces. Where you can, put living-area lights on dimmers so you can control the mood through the evening.
It's also worth thinking about load-shedding and power cuts. A rechargeable lamp or two in the main living area keeps things usable when the power goes off.
The short version
- Layer ambient, task and accent light in every room.
- Let the pendant be your statement piece; woven shades add warmth and texture.
- Place table lamps at seated eye level on side tables, consoles and bedsides.
- Use a floor lamp to rescue a dark corner.
- Wall lights free up surfaces and highlight texture.
- Warm white (2700K) bulbs for living spaces, cooler whites for work areas.
